What our clubs do

Dental Clinic for Nomzamo South African and Swedish Rotary Clubs raise funds for the refurbishment of a Dental Clinic for the Community of Nomzamo. Thanks to the multifaceted Partnership the Clinic will now be able to offer a range of dental preventative care, including dental hygiene services and oral hygiene education.

Literacy Project - Global Grant School Libraries Score with a Global Grant Global Grant #1527314 was recently awarded by The Rotary Foundation to the The Rotary Club of Waterfront for their School Libraries Development Project. The process for securing the above Global Grant (GG) started in 2014. During 2015 this complex process continued requiring considerable work from five RC Waterfront Members. We battled to garner sufficient support from Rotary Clubs, companies and individuals to cover the minimum seed fund of US$ 15 000, and to gather the available District Designated Funds (DDF) contributions. Each funding source required official authorization, and many corrections and updates were necessary. On 6 June 2015 the GG Application was submitted to The Rotary Foundation (TRF). However a further delay ensued when TRF insisted on copies of signed MOU's from all the project’s ten schools, plus a written endorsement from the Western Cape Education Department which took 2 months to procure. On 1 September 2015 the GG Application was finally approved by TRF for US$ 57 429. The final contributing Clubs were: Waterfront Rotary Club, Sunrise Rotary Club of Alturas, New Brunswick Rotary Club, New Jersey Rotary Club and Etobicoke Rotary Club. But before the grant payment could be made it was necessary to :- (i)    Arrange the Project Bank Account (ii)   Get authorization of the GG legal document, and (iii)  Confirm the cash contribution. This also proved to be a slow process. The Global Grant funds were finally received by RC Waterfront in March 2016 allowing the Project to commence.

Knysna Fire relief The hard work of giving relief to the Knysna fire victims is ongoing and D9350 is blessed to have President Doug Emanuel; Chair Fire Relief Committee – PP Mick Furman  and Admin Fire Relief Committee – PP Sharon Richards taking up this challenge. Thank you! The response to our appeal for funding has been very encouraging and the disbursement of the funds is being handled with the utmost confidentiality and discernment. Actual funds received from donors is R 1 804 622 with more pledged.

Community Project - RC Luderitz Making Playtime Safer in Lüderitz The Lüderitz Rotary Club has upgraded the Nautilus playground at a cost of N$230 000. During the recent inauguration of the Nautilus playground President of the Lüderitz Rotary Club Maritz Morgan said this is the eighth playground renovated by the Rotary Club at Lüderitz. Morgan said this particular playground was established by means of a partnership between Rotary Club Bocholt, Lüderitz Town Council and the Rotary Club of Lüderitz. She said they are focusing on the wellbeing of the youth by building playgrounds, with the aim of keeping children off the streets and away from drug abuse and violence and to create a safe environment, where children can play together. The Rotary Club of Lüderitz will open two other playgrounds, one of which will be in Aus, as the owners of Klein Aus Vista indicated their willingness to help with the upkeep and maintenance of the playgrounds. The other will be set up at NHE location in Lüderitz. Morgan said they unfortunately still have difficulties regarding the playground in the NHE area, as the erf allocated was not suitable and they are waiting on Lüderitz Town Council to identify an alternative erf, or to assist with other options. At the same occasion Deputy Mayor Brigitte Fredrick applauded the Lüderitz Rotary Club for setting up and upgrading the playgrounds in different locations and at primary schools. Fredrick said playgrounds have a very vital role in every community, as places where children can play safely and make friends. A playground is also a place where children keep busy with play, rather than engaging in counter-productive activities. She said the revamped playground would help create an atmosphere of playing together without discrimination and cultivate the spirit of togetherness, known in Africa as ‘Ubuntu’. District Data Project From Information to Inspiration Rotarians are often so focused on the work we do that we fail to spend time to reflect upon and share our achievements.  Our District PI Team therefore decided to share our good news with a series of infographics and stories of our projects. To do so, we have launched our #infotoinspo campaign or, more formally, the Information to Inspiration Campaign.  (The first two graphics in the series appear herewith.) The District Data Project provided the tool to collate project activity so that a meaningful review of Rotary's work can be shared not just with Rotarians but with our many partners; from Government to non-profit and individuals to corporates.
